Klappentext zu „Phyllida Barlow: folly “
Phyllida Barlow: folly presents the British Council's new commission created by Phyllida Barlow for the British Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale.Best known for her colossal sculptural projects, for over 5 decades Barlow has employed a distinctive vocabulary of inexpensive materials such as plywood, cardboard, plaster, rubber, cement, fabric and paint.
Barlow creates striking sculptures and bold and expansive installations that confront the relationship between objects and the space that surrounds them.
Drawing on memories of familiar objects from her surroundings, Barlow's practice is grounded in an anti-monumental tradition characterised by her physical experience of handling materials in an expedient and direct way.
Lese-Probe zu „Phyllida Barlow: folly “
The first sight of the Pavilion is striking: huge multicoloured spheres block the view of the building, jostling on the portico, gathering around the steps. They are at once festive, like improbable baubles, but also monstrous, their bloated bodies teetering on spindly steel legs. Barlow implants dualities at every turn. The whole exhibition oscillates between a sense of threat and an underlying playfulness, suggesting the sense of exhaustion and desolation after a long and excessive party. Barlow has spoken of her horror and fascination at the similarity between photos of recently deserted battlefields and those of debris-strewn terrains after music festivals or demonstrations.
