Klappentext zu „Pictures of You “
Ten photographs, ten real lives, ten fictional stories: Nature's final battle with Man, the dying hopes of a doomed aviator, the first killing of the Cold War, a black sorceress driven to murder in 1950s Ohio, Stanley Kubrick's musings on the set of Dr Strangelove and the ghosts of Native Americans on Alcatraz. These ten photographs - one from each decade of the 20th century -- come from across the globe, from Siberia and Rangoon, Ohio to Shepperton Studios. All belong to the Archive of Modern Conflict. Over the last 20 years the Archive's small collection of amateur war photographs has grown into one of the world's most moving image treasuries. Its shelves now hold some four million photographs, albums and historical objects, most of which were snapped or owned by ordinary men and women living through extraordinary times. MacLean researched each photograph until no more hard facts could be discerned, and then he imagined the lives of its subjects. On the page he told each subject's possible, true story - in his or her own voice.
Autoren-Porträt von Rory MacLean
Rory MacLean is one of Britain's most creative and acclaimed non-fiction writers. His ten books, including UK bestsellers 'Stalin's Nose' and 'Under the Dragon' (both TPP), have challenged and invigorated the genre, and - according to the late John Fowles - are among works that 'marvellously explain why literature still lives'. He has won awards from the Canada Council and the Arts Council of England as well as a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, and was nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary prize. He has also written and presented over 50 BBC radio programmes and worked on movies with Marlene Dietrich and David Bowie as well as writing regularly for the Guardian. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Rory divides his time between Berlin, Dorset and London where he is writer-in-residence at the Archive of Modern Conflict, weaving narratives into its collection of four million photographs. The Archive of Modern Conflict The AMC was founded in the early 1990s and by David Thomson, owner of Thomson Reuters. The AMC collection includes over 4 million photographs, both professional and amateur: personal albums, press photos, the archives of defunct institutions, regimental albums, postcards, posters and objects. The Tate Modern's recent exhibition, 'Conflict, Time Photography', contained an installation at its centre which was devised by the AMC.
