Schur's decomposition and special order set type twovariables were used to approximate the product of twodecision variables. A Dantzig-Wolfe decompositiontechnique was successfully applied to break apart andsolve a large optimization model encountered in thisdissertation.Using the Blue Plains advancedwastewater treatment plant located in Washington, DCas a case study, we find several Pareto optimalpoints between costs and odors where differenttreatments (e.g., lime addition) and biosolidsdistribution (e.g., to what reuse fields biosolidsshould be applied) strategies should be employed.This model can be used proactively by any typicaladvanced wastewater treatment plants to produce theleast malodorous biosolids at minimal costs.
