The history of Scandinavia's integration into the European World-Economy during the "long sixteenth century" (ca. 1475-1625) is explored for the first time in this stimulating book. Although its focus is on the latter part of the period, the study brings together the long-term developments that affected Scandinavia from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Thirty Years' War. By combining his own in-depth research with current studies of Scandinavian and Baltic landscapes, the author documents the decisive influence of geography, socio-economic conditions and political structures on responses to economic change. The study thus shatters, once and for all, the notion of a uniform response to economic integration in Europe's northern periphery.

Pressezitat
"Maarbjerg's work analyzes the integration of two illustrative regions of the Scandinavian periphery in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in a way that sheds light on the emergence of the Scandinavian polities as modern states... øIt! is well informed by theoretical and methodological perspectives, while fully grounded in deep archival research". (Michael F. Metcalf, University of Minnesota) "The book is very tightly and clearly laid out, it is well written, and the summary sets the findings in excellent perspective by integrating them in an overall Baltic framework." (E. Ladewig Petersen, Historie)"...this fine study should be read by everybody with an interest in early modern Scandinavia." (J.R. Christianson, Scandinavian Studies)
"Dr Maarbjerg is concerned with the Scandinavian response to economic changes in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Such a study of an area which has been poorly covered in works in English is an invaluable addition to our understanding of the function which geographically peripheral areas played in European developments." (Sybil M. Jack, Parergon)
