Joel Waldfogel unterrichtete nach Jahren in Yale seit 1997 an der renommierten Wharton School der Universität Pennsylvania. 2010 wurde er als Professor für Angewandte Wirtschaftswissenschaften an die Carlson School of Management der University of Minnesota berufen. Mit seinen wissenschaftlichen Studien zur wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung des Weihnachtsfests begann er bereits vor beinahe 20 Jahren.
