Anesthesia for obstetrics is one of the highest volume areas in anesthesiology. It is an area with a small subspecialty society (SOAP), and an area in which general anesthesiologists without subspecialty training continue to work in large numbers. As the number of caesarean section has increased, and the age of mothers in the US and Europe has increased and with it the potential for complications during birth, the role of anesthesiologists in the delivery room has become increasingly important. Shnider and Levinson's Anesthesia for Obstetrics is one of the two primary textbooks that have guided the field through its development, the other being Dave Chestnut's book. Shnider has traditionally been the more clinical and less exhaustive reference, and the new edition will continue to display that pedigree. A new editorial group will take the reins from the UCSF group, and the book will shift to a full color format. The number of chapters will increase by 10, but the size of the chapters will shrink, resulting in a book of about 900 printed pages. The new edition will come with a Solution site. Sections covered inlcude: Physiology and Pharmacology; Assessment of the Fetus; Analgesia and Anesthesia for Labor and Vaginal Delivery; Anesthesia for Cesarean Delivery: Management of Postoperative and Postpartum Issues; Anesthetic Considerations and Management of Obstetric Complications; Risks, Strategies and Management of Anesthetic Complications; Anesthetic Management of the Parturient with Co-existing Disorders; Maternal Safety, Morbidity, and Mortality; and Anesthetic Considerations for Reproductive, In-utero, & Non-obstetric Procedures.

Rezension zu „Shnider and Levinson's Anesthesia for Obstetrics “
"This book is in direct competition with Chestnut's Obstetric Anesthesia:Principles and Practice, 4th edition, Chestnut et al. (Elsevier, 2009), which is already somewhat dated in its print form (although it has an online component). This book is somewhat easier to read, as well as easier to navigate online. The search and print functions are user friendly, and help make this book the better choice for trainees. This fifth edition continues the tradition of excellence established in 1979." Doody's Reviews Martin H Dauber, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine) Weighted Numerical Score: 97 - 5 Stars!
