Harvey Pekar, geboren 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio arbeitete 35 Jahre lang als Archivar in einem Krankenhaus. In den 1960er Jahren lernte er den Künstler Robert Crumb kennen und entwickelte die Idee, Comics über seinen eigenen, wenig glamourösen Alltag zu schreiben.
