This book is an appraisal of the adoption of the concept of ADR by theNigerian Traditional Institutions. It is motivated by the fact that muchattention has been paid in the last decade to the emergence of theconcept of Alternative Dispute Resolution and its mechanisms. This hasbeen largely attributable to the short comings of the conventional meansof dispute resolution, to wit litigation. While the advancement in theinstitutionalisation of ADR in Nigeria is admirable and indeedcommendable, this work advocates for the adoption of ADR by NigerianTraditional Institutions in the hopes that the development in conventionalADR would be at par with that of Customary ADR. This book, while relyingon the wealth of research done by writers in the field of ADR andCustomary ADR, examined the traditional framework for adopting ADR; itanalysed the extent to which ADR has been adapted to the process oftraditional dispute resolution; it has outlined possible challenges to theadaptation of ADR to traditional dispute situations; and it has identifiedthe role of relevant stakeholders in entrenching the concept of ADR in thevarious Nigerian Traditional Institutions.
