William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English dramatist, poet, and actor, generally regarded as the greatest playwright of all time. Jane Armstrong was born and brought up in North London. Her first encounter with Shakespeare was through music, at an early performance of Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. She has worked on the Arden Shakespeare for a number of years, as copy-editor, and later as editorial series manager and commissioning editor. She is the editor of The Arden Dictionary of Shakespeare Quotations.
