Claude Simon wurde 1913 auf Madagaskar geboren. Er lebte in Paris und im südfranzösischen Roussillon. Zur Zeit des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs war er in Barcelona. Unmittelbar nach Kriegseinbruch (1940) eingezogen, geriet er in deutsche Kriegsgefangenschaft, konnte jedoch fliehen. Der Hauptvertreter des "Nouveau Roman" erhielt 1985 den Literatur-Nobelpreis. 2005 starb Claude Simon 91-jährig in Paris.
