William M. Thackeray, geb. 1811 in Kalkutta als Sohn eines Beamten der Ostindien-Kompanie und in englischen Internatsschulen erzogen, brach sein Studium der Mathematik in Cambridge ab und reiste nach Frankreich, Holland und Deutschland, wo er 1830 Goethe seine Aufwartung machte. 1833 ging er nach Paris und studierte Malerei, was ihn befähigte, viele seiner späteren literarischen Werke selbst zu illustrieren. Nach London zurückgekehrt, betätigte er sich als Anwalt, Journalist und Verleger. Seine literarische Laufbahn begann er mit Kritiken und parodistischen Beiträgen für führende englische Zeitungen und Magazine. Thackeray gilt nach Charles Dickens als der bedeutendste englische Romancier des viktorianischen Zeitalters.
