Pressezitat
"This work is fascinating and informative in the presentation of military history in Western Civilization. Gavaghan writes with a knowledge of events and places that is authoritative and interesting." (David J. Pittman, Washington University, St. Louis)"Gavaghan's ambitious overview of Western military history is solidly grounded b ut fresh, liberally laced with humor and unorthodox interpretations." (Dwight B. Heath, Brown University)
"Gavaghan's idea is excellent - a popular history...reminding readers that a nation or an empire can survive only so long as it has the actual strength to do so, focusing on the military might and the will of its people." (E.W. Davis, formerly Trinity College, Choice)
"This work is informative, fun to read, and an excellent goad to thought. For people who are not particularly interested in ancient military history, this is excellent one-volume overview that hits on essential issues of both grand strategy and tactics. For those who are ancient military history buffs or scholars it will sometimes cause exclamations of 'Outrageous', but more often, 'I wish I'd thought of that'. I recommend it highly..." (Leroy Thompson, Infantry)
