The Dionysus Group is a thoughtful, probing analysis and, at the same time, a passionate recreation of the author's experience in the Off-Off Broadway Theatre of the late 1960s. As a founding member and leading actor in The Performance Group's internationally acclaimed production of Dionysus in '69, directed by Richard Schechner, William Shephard takes the reader into the heart of the group process where imagination and inspiration becomes intermixed with paranoia and dissociation. The author's analytical approach is grounded in methods of psychology, sociology, and anthropology; however, he uses a novelistic style to engage the reader's participation - much the same way that audiences were encouraged to participate - in one of the most dynamic theatre experiences of its day.

Pressezitat
"I saw 'Dionysus in '69' in '69 and sat on the highest tower in the performing garage. I felt I needed an overview because I could clearly see that I was witnessing the most challenging, frightening, and intense theatre I'd ever come across. That night changed the way I thought of theatre for the rest of my life. 'The Dionysus Group' is a fascinating personal document of a very special time in American theatre, as well as an insightful look at group dynamics." (Spalding Gray, Author of 'Swimming to Cambodia') "This is a delightfully honest and engaging portrait of the Performance Group and their production of 'Dionysus in '69' by one of its founder members. ...full of insight into the nature of collective theatre work and ... a valuable exposé of the production which put the Performing Garage on the theatrical map."
