In 'The Form and Function of Analyticity,' Iinvestigate the different use of the concept ofanalyticity arising from different interpretations ofthe implications of general relativity. Don Howard'shas argued that Einstein's break with members of theVienna Circle is due to the latter's retention of aformal distinction between analytic and syntheticpropositions and Einstein?s insistence on a holistconception of scientific language. The assumedpremise of that argument is that theanalytic-synthetic distinction must necessarilyentail atomism. Thomas Oberdan argues against thesoundness of Howard's premise by offering Carnap'sproject as a counter-example. I explore how Oberdan'sclaim could be understood; i.e. how Carnap's projectcould be consistent with some sort of holism. I alsosuggest that by re-interpreting the notion ofanalyticity; by prioritizing the function of analyticjudgments over their logical form, theanalytic-synthetic distinction can be compatible withholism.
