Play resides at the heart of the Platonic dialogues, shaping their insights as well as informing their style. The Play of the Platonic Dialogues traces the prominent role of play, both as a general philosophical characteristic and as influencing the treatment of key issues. The nature of the forms, of the city, of virtue, of the soul and its immortality - these and others have been shaped by play. This book shows how Platonic playfulness is joined with the deepest seriousness throughout the dialogues.

Pressezitat
"In 'The Play of the Platonic Dialogues' Bernard Freydberg addresses with keen perceptiveness a major aspect of the Platonic dialogues that has seldom received more than scant attention. His study, itself by no means lacking in a certain lawful playfulness, proceeds rigorously from the dialogues themselves, and throughout he is remarkably attentive to the subtlety and texture of Plato's writings. Whether it is a question of the 'eide', of the city, of philosophy and poetry, or even of death and immortality, Freydberg shows how a profound sense of play is at the heart of the Platonic dialogues. He brings to light, as no one else has, just how the enactment of play functions in the dialogues, showing, for instance, how a certain play in discourse can have the effect of giving measure to discourse that otherwise would have become inappropriately serious. 'The Play of the Platonic Dialogues' is a rare and provocative contribution to Platonic studies." (John Sallis, Pennsylvania State University)
