The relationship between Chinese mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law has been characterized as the most problematic family relationship in Chinese history. The Chinese mother-in-law is generally depicted as a jealous and power hungry woman who gangs up with her son to bully her daughter-in-law in order to secure her place in the family. With globalization, however, young generations from all over the world are exposed to different cultural values, including views on marriage. Despite the cultural exchange, the myth of the \"evil\" Chinese mother-in-law persists, affecting the lives of many. This thesis investigates the ?evil? mother-in-law myth based on social, cultural and historical contexts and hopes to present a more accurate picture of the living reality of this debatable relationship in the present time. Even though this study was targeted at Chinese population, the findings may be generalized across cultures in that it provides a structural analysis on the relationship that lessens the emotional charge that has historically been associated with the infamous triangular relationship.
