After Einstein, it can neither be said that time is absolute, nor that eternity is timeless. Indeed, contemporary physics may suggest that eternity is the fullness of times. Because much Christian thought still adheres to an absolute time and a timeless eternity, it is all the more opaque to the emerging non-mechanistic scientific worldview. After reviewing theological notions of time and eternity, relativity theory, quantum theory, and three noted cosmologists, this study shows how Christian theology's revisiting of its doctrine of the Trinity can lead to a fruitful consonance with the natural sciences.

Pressezitat
"'Times of the Trinity' brings together the rich heritage of the church's understanding of eternity, as reinterpreted by the øtwentieth! century's renewed doctrine of the Trinity, and the contemporary array of discussions about time in physics and cosmology into a creative and compelling new proposal. In doing so, Larson makes a brilliant contribution to one of the leading edges of current theology in its scholarly and thoroughgoing engagement with science." (Robert John Russell, Professor and Director of the Center for Theology and Natural Science, Berkeley)"Duane Larson wants to help us all reappropriate the classical Christian doctrine of the Trinity in a theologically coherent and intellectually fruitful way. A proper understanding of the Trinity will help us to answer another pesky question: how can an 'external' God relate to a 'temporal' world? To understand this question we need to understand the concept of time in twentieth century physics; and so Larson leads us through relativity and quantum theory. He rightly says that good science in its own right is to be celebrated. This book is a major contribution to the theology-science dialogue, and it shows how the doctrine of the Trinity can be conceptually meaningful in a scientific age." (Ted Peters, Professor of Systematic Theology, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union)
"This book will be of particular interest for those who think that theology must utilize ideas and concepts from the natural sciences, and who believe that trinitarian thought is central to systematic theology. It is well written, and provides substantial notes and references." (Ned Wisnefske, Dialog)
