This book is based on a qualitative case study thatuses Vygotskian sociocultural theory and Freireancritical theory to explore the perspectives ofelementary teachers on the impact of transience onliteracy. The teachers' stories highlight how theliteracy achievement and the life chances of manyeconomically disadvantaged, linguistic, and racialminority students are being curtailed and threatenedby frequent, non-routine, non-grade promotionalschool changes. The teachers perceived thattransience has a deleterious effect on the orallanguage, reading, and writing development ofstudents in elementary schools with high levels oftransience. The study reveals both the macro and themicro-level dynamics of transient students' languageand literacy learning and demonstrates that theschooling and literacy education of transientstudents is a social and political issue, and amatter of social justice for those who have littleand need much more. The study presents a number ofspecific recommendations to respond to the challengesassociated with the perceived negative impact oftransience on literacy.

Her broad experience comesfrom teaching English, French, and working as a teacher-librarianin elementary and high schools. Her research interests includecritical literacy, student transience, children's literature, andinformation literacy.
