LYNN McALPINE is a Professor in the Faculty of Education and former Director of the Centre for University Teaching and Learning at McGill University, Canada. She has received distinguished research awards from both the American Educational Research Association and the Canadian Society for Studies in Higher Education. McAlpine is presently on secondment to the University of Oxford as Director of the Centre for Excellence in Preparing for Academic Practice, and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Education. She is also Co-Editor of the International Journal of Academic Development. GERLESE AKERLIND has extensive experience in academic development at the Australian National University. As an academic developer, she has always had a focus on the breadth of academic work, of which teaching and learning is but a part, as well as a focus on early career academics. Since 2006 she has been seconded to Oxford University on a part-time basis to work on the development of research education and research supervision. She is also a Research Associate (honourary) of the Oxford Learning Institute. Between 2005-2007 she was co-editor of the journal, Higher Education Research and Development (HERD), and is on the editorial board for Education Research Review.
