She served with the U.S.Navy in Mexican waters during the Mexican-American War and was, after the war, was temporarily transferred to the U.S. Coast Survey as USC&GS Walter Forward before being returned to the Revenue Cutter Service for service during the American Civil War. Walter Forward -- a schooner built in 1841 by William Easby at Washington, D.C., for service as a cutter in the Revenue Marine -- was delivered to that service at Washington on 23 April 1842.
