Autoren-Porträt von Joann Frasier Dasent
A call went out by the National Association of Black Storytellers in search of stories for their first anthology. Joann Frasier Dasent responded by submitting a revised Aesop Fable. She reached out to a coworker who owned a store called To Walk A Crooked Mile. After purchasing a copy of an 1848 Aesop Fables book her journey began. She was inspired to write The Farmer, His Son and Their Mule. The fable went from the pages of the anthology to: a reading at Barnes and Noble where an upright bass player accompanied her as listeners sat in aw. She was invited to share the fable with a group of girls during an early morning program. A young tap dancer stepped to the beat of the farmer and his son and their mule. Shortly afterward the fable was introduced and read at Springside School’s Book Fair. A handmade quilt was made for the visual learners to follow the story and now a children’s book helps to bring it all together. Joann is the founder of Regenerating Our Offspring Through Stories, Inc. a non-profit organization that uses the art of storytelling to promote literacy in order to reach the various types of learners in a multicultural society. While looking back on the different ways that she included music, dance, call and response, a quilt she hopes that her mission statement is being fulfilled. Joann holds a M.A. Degree in the Oral Traditions. She has been married to Ronald Wesley Dasent for 25 years. They live in Glenside, Pa. She has one daughter Trena and one son Michael. Her only granddaughter Astarte’ has been the source of her inspiration and is currently a student at Hampton University. Joann’s mother Cleo is 86 years young and has waited patiently to read her first book.
