An engaging read that explores independent documentary film in India as a site of resistance.
This book looks at how independent Indian documentary film reworks the relationship between film-makers, their narratives, their subjects and their audience, challenging the dominant idea of documentary as a discourse of the real. Based on close textual analysis, conversations with film-makers and drawing on Breitrose’s cinéma-vérité film-maker as a ‘fly in the soup’, this work explores the place of documentary within the Indian public sphere.
K.P. Jayasankar and Anjali Monteiro are Professors at the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India, since 1983 and 1988, respectively. They have made over 40 documentaries, and their work has been screened at many film festivals across the world. Jointly, they have won 32 national and international awards for their films, the most recent being the Basil Wright Award for Like Here Like There at the 13th RAI International Ethnographic Film Festival, Edinburgh 2013. They have had four retrospectives of their films: Vibgyor Film Festival, Kerala (2006), Bangalore Film Society (2010), Madurai International Film Festival (2012) and Parramasala, Sydney (2013). An adaptation of their film Saacha (The Loom) was a part of the exhibition Project Space: Word. Sound. Power. at the Tate Modern, London, between July and November 2013. They have been mentors and commissioning editors for a number of award-winning documentary projects by young film-makers.
They write in the broad area of media and cultural studies, with focus on documentary film, censorship, critical theory and issues of media representation. They have been fellows and visiting faculty at several universities, including University of Technology Sydney, Goldsmiths College, London, University of Western Sydney, Lund University, Sweden, and University of California, Berkeley, and have lectured at several universities in Australia, USA, UK, Asia and Europe. They are founder members of Vikalp, a collective of documentary filmmakers campaigning for freedom of expression, and are on the boards of several professional and voluntary organisations.
