Is there trouble in Paradise?
Not many people would consider northern Wisconsin Paradise, where winter comes early and spring comes late, and the snowfall in between is measured by the foot rather than the inch. Yet Helen Wiels Wagner is happily living in her adopted state, and still madly in love with her husband Jackson. So why is it she feels something akin to jealousy when her friend Augie Burns announces he's getting married again, and Jackson's cousin Nicholas Conner enters into a relationship with a woman who resembles Helen? Why does Helen only find negative attributes in the women with whom Augie and Conner are involved?
Helen completely adores her three-year-old daughter Hollis, but Helen is aware not everyone considers the willful, precocious child as charming and delightful as she and Jackson find her. As much as she loves her daughter, Helen experiences trepidation at the idea that a second child might be another Hollis. Jackson is eager to expand their family, while Helen would prefer to wait.
Then the network news carries the story that Jackson's one-time fiancé, Claire Day, committed suicide in New York City by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Having Claire irrevocably removed from their lives should have brightened Helen's outlook. All it did was make her wonder if Jackson was still harboring feelings for the woman he'd always claimed he hadn't cared for at all.
With her imagination running wild, Helen begins to catastrophize every aspect of her life, able only to see the worst outcome for anything that happens. In an attempt to get her thoughts under control and get closure on Claire Day, she asks Conner's assistant to research what was going on in Claire's life at the end. What he discovers opens up a new world of possibilities that could explain some of the recent strange occurrences in Helen's life. But will anyone believe Helen's theory before it's too late to save herself and her daughter?
