This is a biography of Helen's life in Lorain, Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio spanning 1900-1981. It also tells of parts of her extraordinary legacy. Although she often experienced a painful persona life-her husband filing bankruptcy and committing suicide three years after their wedding day, Helen was committed to spreading the eternal message of love. Lamp shade designer, advertising manager, book keeper and editor of Gibson Publishing, Helen was a most industrious individual who advocated women's rights in the workplace.

By 1940, Helen was widely acknowledged as one of the leading poets in the greeting card industry, but her work is also published in over 72 books! Helen's personal success garnered international attention, even before dying a millionaire on April 23, 1981. Dr. Tavenner's biography is informative and succinct.

You will also learn of Dr. Tavenner's rather interesting "30" year journey with Helen, a woman she never had the pleasure of personally meeting.

Dr. Mary (Sally) Tavenner grew up in Lorain, OH and was fascinated by her hometown hero, Helen S. Rice. After earning a degree in liberal arts at Maria Regina College, Syracuse, NY; a Bachelor of Arts from Catholic University in Washington, DC; a Master's Degree in Scripture and Religious Studies from St. Charles Seminary, Philadelphia and her Doctorate in Education, majoring in Reading and Language Arts, Dr. Tavenner returned home to Lorain to write and publish this and 7 other books: My Friendship with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton; Memories of Mom: They called her "Dutch"; Nun of This and Nun of That: Book One: Beginnings: Nun of This and Nun of That: Book Two: Making Vows; France, 1996: Memoirs of a Writer in France; Peru, 2002: Memoirs of a Writer in Peru; Puerto Rico, 2006: Memoirs of a Writer in Puerto Rico.Dr. Tavenner founded the International Writers Association/Friends of Helen Steiner Rice on December 12, 1999 with three others. The group now numbers more than 60 members, around the world.
