In the fifth century, Advent began on 11 November and lasted the 44 days until Christmas. But from sixth century the Catholic Church reduced Advent to four weeks in length. However, in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Advent is longer. It spans the 40 days between 28 November and 6 January.
