Thousand and One Nights (translated by Fang Ping) is also called Arabian Nights. It is the treasure of Arabian literature. It is said that there was a king in ancient Arabia who married a woman every day and killed her the next morning. There was a girl who wanted to stop him from doing such cruel practice and volunteered to be his one-day queen. After entering the palace, she began to tell the king a story and didn't end it till the time of execution. The king was curious about the ending of the story and postponed her execution to the next day. She told the stories one after another. The stories didn't end ill the time of execution every time. Therefore, the king postponed her execution day after day to hear the conclusions. So it goes on for 1,001 nights. The king finally got rid of his terrible practice and she became his permanent queen. This is the origin of Thousand and One Nights. Since her stories are so attractive to the king, they must be very pleasant. Indeed, the stories such as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp and Sinbad the Sailor have been spread all over the world.
