This book is a brief history of the circus in twentieth century Ireland. In these pages you will find echoes of wonderful performers and their lives as devoted to their art. Flicking between these pages we too can resonate with the belly-roar of the crowd and sense their joy and fear. It is all here. The sweat, the spit and the sawdust. And all the mystery that is life.
Autoren-Porträt von Mícheál Ó hAodha, Tony McCarthy
Dr. Mícheál Ó hAodha is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Limerick Ireland. He has written and edited more than 100 books in both Irish and English, mainly as relating to the history of migration and the Irish diaspora. Two recent books are Thar Toinn (Across the Water) Dublin: Coiscéim, (2013), an anthology of short stories set amongst the Irish diaspora and as written by Ireland's leading short story writers in Irish, and "The Silent People?": New Perspectives on the Irish Abroad (with Máirtín Ó Catháin, University of Central Lancashire, UK); London: Rowman and Littlefield (2014). He is a regular contributor to the Irish-language sections of The Irish Times.Tony McCarthy is a circus historian and enthusiast. His lifelong interest in circus was initially sparked by the childhood visits to his family home of both Teddy Fossett and Tom Duffy when their circuses visited Limerick. Tony would listen fascinated as these great Irish circus aristocrats reminisce in the company of Tony's late father, Patrick about the circuses that had performed in Cappamore, County Limerick over the years and the famous artistes who had frequented McCarthy's Circus Bar in the village. Tony has wonderful memories of the build-up on the Fairgreen in Cappamore and the hosting of the Big Top alongside so many other excited and happy children. While still in his early-twenties Tony travelled during the summer with Fossetts Circus and his good friends Paddy and Mary Brennan. He hopes that this book conjures up memories of those most halcyon of days.
