The Verses of Jijiu, originally known as the Chapter of Jijiu, was the literacy textbook that the Western Han Dynasty Emperor ordered Huangmenling Shi You to compile for children to learn to read. Tradition has it that the earliest copy of the Verses of Jijiu was written by Huang Xiang, and the block-printed edition has passed down till today. It got this name because the text starts with Jijiu.The Chapter of Jijiu is composed of three-character, four-character or seven-character verses, covering names, organizations, creatures, rituals, and official titles and others, just like a small encyclopedia.This text has been used as the main literacy textbook circulating from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty. It can also be used as a model book.The strokes in the text are simple, dignified and implicit. The calligraphic style tends to be Lisu. The strokes, though having connection with each other, have their own rules, making the characters to be separated and introverted.The whole text has the flavor of primitive simplicity, warmness, calmness and raciness, and great ease.The Verses of Jijiu by Huang Xiang (The Three Kingdoms) compiled by Zheng Hexin and Hong Liang is an important material for beginners and teenagers to learn calligraphy.
