Autoren-Porträt von Dr. Julio Antonio del Marmol
Julio Antonio del Marmol is a Cuban who began to write during the hours of his embittered childhood, harsh adolescence, and tormented youth. He had to live through the darkest moments of his country when the forces of the Cuban “Revolution” promised false dawn of peace. In broad daylight, its reality meant tears and blood for most Cubans. In Cuba, Russian Roulette of the World, the reader will find realism, emotion, tenderness, and bitterness. Adolescent disappointments are the most painful and Julio Antonio del Marmol knew them all. In his case, fortunately, he was not dazzled by the revolution’s petty tyrants with whom he became acquainted in extraordinary circumstances. Incredibly mature for his years, he extricated himself from demagogy and found the right way.
This book describes the drama of an eager young man, determined in the end to risk his life for a noble ideal. His selfless motives have been unmistakably proven. The success his venture, his solid preparation, as well as his opportunities in the United States where he lives have not made him forget the Cuban tragedy.
Learning from past experience, the author looks ahead to free horizons beyond the bloody boundaries of his homeland. Cuba, Russian Roulette of the World, is a truly human document, its account vital for history and future generations.
We follow him and his companions in their thrilling escape and rejoice at its lucky completion, having first learned of the contradictions resulting from changed guidelines, and the serious consequences of rejecting the “truths” formulated by the Cuban communists.

Julio Antonio del Marmol, born in 1947 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, had all the necessary endowments to be a man of his time. In the pursuit of his first inclination, music, he already had composed various songs when, between wobbly steps initiated by the Revolution and his own opinions, he studied composition in the Havana Conservatory of Music before turning to a more practical career. In 1970 he graduated from the School of Veterinary in the University of Havana, obtaining a PhD in Animal Genetics.
Many events in his young life have happened in quick succession, as it is with war and revolution. At an early age he was made a military leader by a seemingly ridiculous incident that nevertheless shows the mental “depth” of the revolutionaries. Lucky for him, Julio Antonio soon realized that arms can be enslaving and murderous in the hands of tyrants.
He decided to abandon his own privileged lifestyle as part of Castro’s elite because his integrity and moral values passed by his father and his ancestors did not allow him to watch the suffering of his people in silence. He then formed a group of brave men who were also dedicated to stopping the socialist regime as his uncle off ered to him the opportunity to work in this resistance movement. At the tender age of 13, he was trained and prepared for the fight, and most persecuted and feared spy is born, earning from his enemies his codename, “the Lightning.”
Cuba, Russian Roulette of the World also could bear the title, “Destination, Freedom.” This was the goal pursued by the small group making their getaway with Julio Antonio: freedom and dignity. Their destination was the United States and some of them, including the author, made it.
Included in this book is the score of a piano composition by Julio Antonio and various documents attesting to the truth of his narration. In addition to the “Julio Antonio’s Ave Maria” he is the author of “Pobre Bambino”, “Lejos de Mi”, “Cuba Linda”, “En tu Cumpleanos”, “En un Jardin Encantado”, “One More Attempt,” and about 45 others.
