Time and again, Detective Murphy along with his best friend and partner, Detective Eddy Boswell, get close to the answer only to have witnesses and informants end up dead. Sergeant Jim Cates demands answers from Rick and Eddy not excuses. As Rick and Jackie worked closely together, his feelings for her grows into a desire for more than a one night stand. But Jackie is hard book to read and Rick is unsure what move to use next. Commitment is not on his agenda.

Circumstances start to point to a traitor among the police department, an insider giving away tips on the next bust and staying one step ahead of the detectives. Among many likely suspects, Jackie could be one. Eddy questions her loyalty, but Rick can't accept it. The possibility drives a wedge between the brothers in blue, endangering the allegiance of long-time partners and an enduring friendship that had deepen with the years.

Detective Murphy is not convinced that this daughter of a highly-decorated police captain could in any way be dirty. Is this street-wise cop succumbing to the batting of Jackie's eyelashes and her rose bud lips? Eddy is afraid he is and must find some way to bring his partner back to reality. It wasn't the first time a woman had come between them and they had both swore it never would again. Was it jealousy or his cop intuition that made Detective Boswell anxious?

It seemed everywhere the two detectives turned they ran into stone walls, dead-ends and long lectures about following correct procedures. Until a break in the case, a street punk with a strange, little gun is arrested. The missing piece surfaces. But how do they tie this evidence to D'Amelio, without risking their careers or their lives.

Frustrated with set-backs, besieged by doubts, pressure from superiors, interference by the Feds, and now falling in love, self-confident Detective Murphy suddenly finds he's over his head and swimming in confusion. Trust is shattered and events accelerate, until a strange turn of events puts Jackie's very life in Rick's hands. He must risk it all or die trying.
