While minimally invasive surgical techniques and instrumentation have in recent years become more sophisticated and its practice is being championed by many respected surgeons, there are still some who are skeptical regarding the claims of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). There is a need in the market for a book that presents a realistic assessment of the capabilities of MISS while acknowledging its limits. This book's focus is to assist a spine surgeon in making the determination as to whether a minimally invasive approach would be of greater benefit to the patient than an open approach by discussing the clinical situations MISS is ideally suited for, and those for which it may not provide surgeons with a rational basis for when to use these techniques. Each surgical chapter then addresses the preoperative considerations, operative technique as well as a discussion of complications and pearls/pitfalls. It is organized by the three anatomical regions of the spine, closing with a fourth section on stereotactic radiosurgery, instrumentation systems, image guidance and promising advances in the field.
