Bill Pendleton gets involved in a murderous hunt for a valuable statuette. The years is 1960, after the death of his grandfather and mentor, 28-year-old Bill Pendleton feels lonely and adrift, managing his grandfather's import business in a depressed fog. Then one day he reads a letter his grandfather left for him, describing a cache of diamonds hidden in a blackbird stage prop made for a film thirty years earlier. The only people to know about the marble-sized jewels, hidden out of desperation, are now dead. The letter warns Bill about the tragedy that befalls those who come into contact with the diamonds. Nevertheless, Bill becomes captivated by the notion of flying to Hollywood in search of the treasure. Looking back on his life, he realizes that he has been nothing more than a passive observer, all of his decisions made for him by other people. The prospect of adventure breathes new life into Bill, and he leaps at the chance to strike out on his own — and maybe even be a hero like in the movies. Unfortunately, he has no clue, what he's getting himself into. While Bill introduces himself to the granddaughter of the man who hid the jewels, a hired hit man and a cadre of spies are chasing after top-secret documents smuggled out of Area 51 in Nevada. Before long, Bill becomes tangled in their web of danger, deceit, and comedic blunders. For some reason, everyone wants to get their hands on the blackbird. But do they know about the diamonds? In the end, Bill learns that nothing is quite what it seems, and no one can be trusted — not even a beautiful woman.
