National Coordinator for the same which has accumulated a data of over 1 lakh eclampsia patients in the country.
As the President, through the ‘Reaching the Unreached Initiative’, he has been instrumental in reaching out not only to the members of the Federation but also to the patients and most importantly to the bureaucrats with some important interventions, which have today seen the light of the day. Use of IVIS for treatment of anemia, availability of Magnesium sulfate injection and training the medical personnel to use it are some important examples of these interventions. During his tenure as President of FOGSI, Dr. Gupte was the driving force behind the launch of a national initiative called ‘Save the Mother & Newborn India Project’ in collaboration with Government of India, IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) NNF (National Neonatology Forum). This involved reaching the antenatal care to the unreached mothers in remote parts of India, followed by delivery care and post natal care including contraception. This has taken off well and is hoped to be a major national movement in near future. The Government of India program of safe motherhood is based on this initiative.
Currently he also holds positions as the member of the ICMR Committee, member of the Ethics Committee of the MMC and the MCI and has been awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists by the Honoris Causa, the highest award of the college for his exemplary work in the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and for the health of women.
His students and admirers look up to this iconic figure for inspiration and guidance. In addition to being a proficient practitioner and a visionary, he is also trained as a lawyer to keep in tune with the wave of medico-legal issues that had hit the medical profession that time. He has promoted standardization of care and is a stringent follower of checklists and drill in his institutions. He is an ardent reader and perfectly updated with the most recent interventions in the field of medicine.
