Edward Jennings' ranch in frontier New Mexico Territory's harsh Tularosa Basin is going well, but he and his partner JJ need more cattle if their ranches are to profit. Both are short of cash, so stocking the ranges is going to take time--unless somehow, Ed can round up a herd from his properties in Texas that were confiscated by Confederate officials.
Now that the Confederacy is no more, can Ed recover his property? The horses were certainly taken as mounts by rebel cavalrymen, but the cattle may still be there and if so, they could be driven tothe Territory to stock his and his partner's ranges.
But there's a problem; a family has moved into his ranch and claimed it as 'abandoned'.
Can Ed evict the squatters, preferably without killing anyone?
And that's only the beginning; Ed has to deal with rustlers, herd-cutters, outlaws, gunfighters (including a confrontation with the officer who'd carried out the Nueces Massacre in Texas), and more!
Whether it be a stealthy attack on his reputation, an ambush, or a confrontation with hired gunmen, Ed is no man to back away from a fight!
Fortunately, there's a friendly widow in Mesilla Town who might just be willing to help Ed with his problems, except for one:
how to deal with the niece who intends to replace his deceased wife. Sending her east to school was a temporary solution, but now she's back and determined to take over his life!
He's invented himself a number of times over the years. He's currently an amateur scientist, musician, photographer, birdwatcher, and commentator on current affairs. now.
Jack retired (twice) before becoming a full-time caregiver for a disabled adult son. That kept him at home but didn't occupy all of his time, so he turned to writing. Kevin died in March 2014, but the writing continues.
