About half of the immigrants who came to the American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were indentured. This practice carried on well into the nineteenth century in a smaller scale.
The term "indentured servant" is just another way of saying you signed a paper agreeing to work without wages for a given number of years to pay for your passage to the New World. It was a heavy price to pay, but it was the only way the landless people of Europe's feudal system could get to America where they had a chance to be free from serfdom and have land of their own.
