Foundations of the Theory of General Equilibrium (ePub)

Yves Balasko is the author of more than fifty papers and three monographs on the theory of general equilibrium. He is currently Professor of Economics at the University of York (UK), after having held permanent positions at the University of Paris 1 and the University of Geneva. He has also held visiting positions in many universities worldwide but, most notably, at the Pontifical University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Carnegie-Mellon University (USA), Cornell University (USA), the University of California, San Diego (USA), the University of Pennsylvania (USA), and the University of San Andres (Argentina). After graduating from Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris in Mathematics, he was an economist at Electricite de France and, following a tradition that had been established by another famous economist, Marcel Boiteux, he became in charge of the application of the theory of marginal cost pricing to electricity. He got his Science Doctorate at the University Paris IX Dauphine for a thesis in mathematics entitled "The theory of general equilibrium from the differential point of view." That thesis was the starting point of that book. The chairman of his thesis committee was the famous mathematician Rene Thom, the father of singularity theory. He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, and a member of the executive committee of the Society for Economic Measurement.
