During the Great Depression, James Fortinberry started kindergarten in Arizona. Soon after, his family moved to Arkansas to become tenant farmers. While working in the cotton fields, young James plowed behind a mule, picked cotton, sometimes attended school, and moved about every two years with his ten siblings and parents-eventually ending up in Mississippi.
