This is a journey to dissect the knowledge of cannabis, and an attemptto make sense of the benefits and effects of consuming cannabis in any form. This book was written from a medical perspective deeply rooted in the normal body processes, and what happens when those processes are disturbed or altered. The material is not written for the purpose to discourage or encourage people to use cannabis in one form or another, but instead to empower the general public with knowledge before they decide to play around with this drug for any reason. Information offered may also be used by parents and teachers trying to educate their communities about the dangers and benefits of cannabis. If there is more information against than for cannabis that is presented throughout this book, that is not by design. We just do not have enough research on the risks and benefits; however, we can infer both from what we know about the extensive research done on other drugs as a guide. While the drugs are not the same, they share some interesting similarities that make the comparison much easier. We can not discuss everything in every detail on the topic of cannabis, but in this book we try focus on some major points and what can be simplified for those with little to no medical knowledge. Please bear in mind that the book was written for people without a solid foundation in science, so some topics and concepts were over-simplified. We start with what is known on the surface about cannabis smoking like effects on the lungs before moving into more complicated topics such as metabolism, law, economics, and social impact, and some of the associated problems.
Autoren-Porträt von Innocent Karikoga
As of the publication of this book, I am a third year physician in training with an in-depth understanding of the foundations of medical sciences. I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, and emigrated to Canada just over 12 years ago. I grew up around a lot of drugs, alcohol, and dozens of chronic diseases. I have friends and family who were slaves of alcohol, smoked in excess, or died of any of the common debilitating illnesses at the time. I always questioned why things were the way they were as I watched the people I cared about disintegrate from within. When I started medical school I had a lot of questions, but could only find a handful of answers as some of the questions were embedded in some complicated social factors. I started looking around the low income suburbs where I lived for the greater part of my life. I studied the differences and similarities to understand the changes I had observed in people who smoked cigarettes and those who smoked marijuana. The differences with those who smoked and the rest of the population in these groups ranged from benign to some unspeakable cases of drug abuse that turned some people I grew up with into daylight zombies. I have lived in four countries: Zimbabwe, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, United States of America, and Canada. Fundamentally, the drug problems in these four countries are all the same, just different drugs and/or different quality. However, the way drug problems are tackled in those four countries vary widely, but all sum up to peeing in the ocean and hoping the entire ocean turns yellow. The governments in these countries all do not pay attention to the root of the problems so they can educate the public. Instead, they try to treat what they see emanating as the problems of drug abuse-that is, overdose, psychosis, violence, and impairment-and the effects of drug abuse on loved ones. The last one is typically only a scratch on the surface, but also happens to be where most activists have put their

best efforts yet. Putting all this dilemma together I chose to write this book to educate the public on some key aspects of one of the most common drugs of abuse: cannabis. The idea of the book is based on the fact that little is known about cannabis to praise or disparage the drug with certainty. While the drug could treat a number of medical and social problems, it also opens a path for huge legal and medical problems. The information in this book is strictly derived from some of the leading medical textbooks, or my understanding of some other overlooked complications and mechanisms based on the same information. I am not here to preach, simply to provide an understanding. After all, you have the right to know and the decision to smoke rests on you!
