This book marks a double celebration in my life: my 80th anniversary and six decades of career achievement. It comprises a comprehensive review of the hypothesis, experiments, results and conclusions stemmed from years of questions and controls, hesitations and daring, doubts and certainties that shaped an intense laboratory and clinical work involving both inpatient and outpatient activities. Since 1977, when I introduced for the first time the term "pharmacotoxicology" in a pharmacology book, I have been devoting all my time and energy to a step by step expedition into the fascinating world of drugs, in an effort to gain maximum benefits and ensure minimum risks from their use.
Because it still does not exist, despite the fact that homeopathy has been practiced as a therapeutic method for more than 200 years.
WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR HOMEOPATHIC PHARMACOLOGY?
Because homeopathic and allopathic medicines co-exist and because ALLOPATHIC PHARMACOLOGY has been created to study “classic” drugs.
For over 200 years, drug therapy has been involving two realities, two categories of products, allopathic and homeopathic, with very different patterns of evolution due to multiple complex causes.
Allopathic drugs are studied within the medical academic education, while being prescribed by all the doctors and used by most of the general population.
They were increasingly obtained from non-natural sources, through chemical synthesis and biotechnological procedures. This triggered a spectacular evolution, with new emerging therapeutic classes that were hard to imagine sometime ago. Their thorough study enabled a better understanding of many mechanisms underlying physiologic and pathologic processes.
The high profitableness of the field has entailed huge investments, which resulted in an overproduction and too many similar, thus useless products. A concomitant, inevitable increase of the incidence and strength of drug adverse effects has been seen too. In many circumstances, mainly in people with chronic diseases or comorbidities, drug therapy is involved in polluting the inner surrounding environment of the human body with strange substances (xenobiotics), tending to become inconsistent with the ecological concept.
As they are prescribed by a minority of doctors and used by a limited number of patients, homeopathic drugs have had a slow evolution. We witnessed no significant progress in this field. Differences between old and recent homeopathic drugs are slight, as if almost nothing were changing during the last two centuries.
