Restoring Democracy, Rule of Law and Economic Stability in Niger:
The situation in Niger remained fluid after members of the presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum at the presidential palace in Niamey.
Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum stated that he intended to protect the hard-won democratic gains made in a country that saw four coups since gaining independence in 1960.
Niger's minister of foreign affairs, Hassoumi Massoudou, seconded this, stating "there was an attempted coup, but of course we cannot accept it".
He also called for the President's unconditional release.
Bazoum, a former interior minister, took office in 2021, marking Niger's first-ever democratic transition.
Seen as one of the great leaders in the Sahel, notably in the fight against Islamist insurgents, his detention drew quick condemnation from the International Community.
UN chief Antonio Guterres called for Bazoum to be released immediately and unconditionally, telling the soldiers to stop obstructing the democratic governance of the country and respect the Rule of Law.
The International Community strongly condemns any attempt to seize power by force and joins the calls of the African Union and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to restore the integrity of Niger's democratic institutions.
President Bazoum stated in the Washington Post, that he is a hostage and called on the international community to restore constitutional order.
"This coup, launched against my government by a faction in the military on July 26, has no justification whatsoever. If it succeeds, it will have devastating consequences for our country, our region and the entire world."
President Joe Biden has called for the immediate release of Niger's elected president and for the country's democracy to be restored, in the highest profile statement by the US since the coup that removed Mohamed Bazoum from power, as Senegal also ramped up the pressure by saying its troops would join a a military intervention if necessary.
Hence we are calling for the release of President Mohamed Bazoum - so that Democracy, Rule of Law and Peace can be restored in the Republic of the Niger.
