Gordon has owned and directed a publishing company, Communication Unlimited, since 1982. It originally specialized in (and continues to offer) books, reports, and audio CDs about writing, empire-building, and niche publishing. For five years C.U. published dental and medical books. For the past five years its education imprint has published key education books for superintendents, principals, and K-12 teachers, including What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know, Teachers Change Lives 24/7, The Perfect School, Finding Middle Ground in K-12 Education: Balancing Best Practices and the Law, and The Kid in Purple Pants.

Burgett earned four academic degrees: B.A., University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (Latin American Studies), M.A., University of Wisconsin, Madison (Luso-Brazilian Studies), M.F.T., Thunderbird Graduate School (Foreign Trade), and an M.A.,Northern Illinois University (History).
