Ivan Petrovych Kotlyarevskyi is a writer, playwright, the first classic of new Ukrainian literature.
He was born on September 9, 1769 in Poltava, in the family of a minor official. Subsequently, Kotlyarevskyi was "granted" a noble title. In 1780, little Ivanko began studying at the Poltava Theological Seminary. The boy especially diligently and persistently mastered the humanitarian disciplines: literature, rhetoric, philosophy, Latin, Greek, French, and German languages. Gets acquainted with ancient literature with interest, translates Horace, Ovid, Virgil.
One of Kotlyarevsky's classmates mentioned the poet that he "had a passion for poetry and knew how to skillfully choose rhymes, witty and successful, for any word, for which his fellow students at the seminary nicknamed him the rhymer."
