Produktinformationen zu „Japan and Asia (ePub)“
The book is a precious reference book for development economics or the political economy of development in Asia or anywhere else. Unlike other books, first, it deals with all the East Asian countries, including Japan and other Asian countries. Second, it offers some empirical research findings based on surveys conducted by the author's group. Research on developing countries has been limited by individual scholars' observations, particularly about the value-related issues like politics or religions. Thirdly, the book digs into the nation-building problems which are often neglected by economists. It bridges the politics, sociology and economics in East Asian countries and is an important reference book for graduate students.
Autoren-Porträt von Shinichi Ichimura
Shinichi Ichimura is a well-known Japanese economist all over the world. In 2005, he retired from all the official positions but still actively delivers public lectures at the professional meetings and writes academic books as professor emeritus of Kyoto University or honorary adviser of the East Asian Economic Association. He graduated from Kyoto University in 1949 and obtained PhD in 1953 from MIT, Cambridge, USA — the first postwar Japanese PhD in economics. His professional article appeared earlier in 1951 in the Review of Economic Studies and since then he had published many articles in Econometrica, The Review of Economics and Statistics and others. He was elected to a fellow of the Econometric Society in 1961 and served the Society as a Council member from 1971 to 1982.
He guided the Japanese government's compilation and application of Interindustrial Tables and (with L R Klein) the construction of the Osaka University Macroeconometric Model of the Japanese Economy.
In 1968, however, he moved to Kyoto University to head the newly established Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and guided its formation and area research of East Asian countries in Kyoto and other Asian countries. He and his colleagues at Kyoto University not only published many articles in their own journal, South East Asian Studies but also founded a new professional association by the name of East Asian Economic Association with many economists not only in Japan but also with those in East and Southeast Asia. He was the first editor of the EAEA's journal, Asian Economic Journal from 1988 to 2000 and elected to the President for 93 to 2001. He still serves as an honorary adviser to the EAEA.
