Esteban Rogelio Garcia was born September 10, 1952 in Bryan, Texas. He shot his first man at the age of eleven for attempting to molest his baby sister. By the age of fourteen, he smoked marijuana, by seventeen he tried heroin. By nineteen he was in prison during one of the worse prison riots in Oklahoma history. In 1974, he became co-writer of the infamous landmark case, Ruiz vs. Estelle Prison Reform Civil Rights Case which took more than thirteen years of litigation. In 1983, he overturned his first murder case and became the first inmate in the State of Texas ever allowed by the Texas court of Criminal Appeals to represent another inmate in a murder trial as an amicus curiae. He was the first inmate to have ever form a non-profit legal aid organization within prison walls. He is responsible for the addition of paragraph (4) in Article 26.13 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and has worked as a freelance post conviction specialist for several law firms in his 35 year career. Today he continues to write litigation manuals for prison inmates throughout the U.S. and lives in New York where he quietly spends most of his time painting.
