Walt Whitman grew up with his eight siblings in New York, and by twelve years old he was apprenticed as a printer. He went on to found two newspapers, the Long-Islander and The Brooklyn Freeman, and become one of the most recognized poets, heralded by everyone from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Allen Ginsberg. Despite his vast contribution to American literature and his devotion to caring for Civil War veterans, including his brother, Whitman was controversial. He was fired from his job as a clerk when the Secretary of the Interior found out he was the author of Leaves of Grass.
