Produktinformationen zu „Moby Dick (World Digital Library Edition) (PDF)“
In a letter to a friend, in 1849, Herman Melville wrote, “I love all men who dive…any fish can swim near the surface, but it takes a great whale to go down stairs 5 miles or more.” He foreshadows his emotional and introspective work Moby-Dick, or The Whale. With its detailed plot and involved symbols, readers can dive deep into their own hearts, but they can also choose to stay on the surface and enjoy this wonderful adventure of the highest caliber. As Captain Ahab urges his ship’s crew on in search of the great whale, Melville explores themes of religion and race. He harpoons the Calvinistic ideas of predetermination and doomed spiritual grace, and replaces them with more Romantic ideas of Noble Savagery and self-redemption. The search for the whale and what it represents is both a personal and universal one.
Autoren-Porträt von Herman Melville
Herman Melville was born in New York City, in 1819, to somewhat wealthy parents. And though his early childhood was one of servants and dancing schools, this changed abruptly when Melville was only eleven. His father died after his business had sent him into bankruptcy, and Melville and his brother Gansevoort were pulled out of school to work and support their mother and six siblings. In 1839, Melville began taking on jobs on merchant sailing ships, and at twenty-two years old he signed on for a three-year voyage with the whaler Acushnet, where an unruly crew and violent captain forced him to jump ship in the South Seas. When he returned home, his sisters urged him to write down the fabulous stories of his adventures. He moved to “Arrowhead” farm in Massachusetts after meeting Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was then working on The Scarlet Letter, but after thirteen years there Melville returned to New York City. He gave up a career in writing, and worked at the New York Customs House for over twenty years until his death in 1891.
