MPLS holds the key to network convergence
"Here at last is a single, all-encompassing resource wherethe myriad applications sharpen into a comprehensible text."Kireeti Kompella, Juniper Fellow, Juniper Networks
"This should be the textbook for MPLS courses, both fortraining of experienced networking professionals and foruniversities." Loa Andersson, Acreo AB, IAB-member and IETFMPLS working group co-chair
"MPLS-Enabled Applications is a must-read for anyone involvedin enterprise or service-provider networks." Dave Cooper,Sr. Manager IP Engineering, Global Crossing, Ltd.
The capability of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) toidentify traffic based on its label at forwarding time, coupledwith its ability to force traffic down pre-established paths, hascreated a whole range of new applications while enabling scaling ofexisting applications. To highlight the emergingdevelopments, Ina Minei and Julian Lucek cover traffic engineering,L3VPNs (Layer 3 Virtual Private Networks), pseudowires, VPLS(Virtual Private LAN Service), and much more. Theymethodically illustrate how MPLS holds the key to networkconvergence by allowing operators to offer more services over asingle physical infrastructure and how it can reduce the cost ofthe network by streamlining operations. With over a hundredillustrations and thirteen in-depth chapters MPLS-EnabledApplications documents why MPLS is now considered thenetworking technology for carrying all types of network traffic, including voice telephony, real-time video, and the many types ofdata traffic.
MPLS-Enabled Applications:
* Provides an authoritative, comprehensive overview of thecurrent status and future potential of MPLS applications, includingthe latest IETF drafts.
* Examines all the major applications, including L3VPN, L2VPN,VPLS and pseudowires.
* Explains how to apply MPLS and tailor it to fit specificscenarios.
* Examines the scaling requirements of equipment at differentpoints in the network under different deployment scenarios.
* Offers inclusive coverage of point-to-multipoint label switchedpaths, DiffServ-aware traffic engineering and QoS, inter-domaintraffic engineering and path computation elements, route targetfiltering, and the latest developments in multicast support forL3VPNs.
* Covers the management and troubleshooting of MPLS networks andassociated services, to enable high availability.
MPLS-Enabled Applications will provide those involved inthe design and deployment of MPLS systems, as well as thoseresearching the area of MPLS networks, with a thoroughly modernview of how MPLS is transforming the networking world.

Autoren-Porträt von Ina Minei, Julian Lucek
Ina Minei has been a network protocols engineer at Juniper Networks for the past five years working on next-generation network technologies of core routers, where she focuses on MPLS protocols and applications. She previously worked at Cisco for two years in various software development projects for routers and switches. Ms Minei is an active participant in industry fora and conferences and has co-filed several patents in the area of IP and MPLS. She holds a Master's degree in computer science from the Technion, Israel. Julian Lucek joined Juniper Networks in 1999 and is currently the Technical Leader for Junos for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, where he has been working with many service providers on the design and evolution of their networks. He previously worked at BT for several years, at first in the Photonics Research Department and later in the data transport and routing area. During this time he gained a PhD in ultrahigh-speed data transmission and processing. He has a Master's degree in Physics form Cambridge University and holds Juniper Networks Certified Internet expert (JNCIE) certification number 21.
