At first I thought this book was going to be filled with ‘coming of age stories’; imparting wisdom and elevating the soul. Then I realized that people ‘come of age’ repeatedly during the course of a lifetime, especially women; our first periods, sprouting breasts, losing our virginity, leaving home, marriage, children, divorce, empty nest; not necessarily in that order.

I am writing this book, from the shady side of fifty. This is the other side of mid-life, as I doubt I will live to be 106. I assume that like the Horses of the Apocalypse, there are still other ‘coming of ages’ approaching; signposts to check our progress.

Are we where we thought we would be?

Do we have that foo-foo dog?

The perfect husband?

The beautiful house?

Where is our picket fence?

Are you hearing that Talking Heads song, right now?

“And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?”

Then I thought this book would be filled with anecdotes that answered the age old question, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that most people of my generation never got around to answering. They fell into jobs, careers, lives and at some point, surrendered to the fact, that the question will remain unanswered.
