The true, heartbreaking struggle of a boys journey from childhood to adulthood is captured here through the eyes of his mother. This compelling and moving journey follows Sam through the onset of the emotional and behavioural disorder that shadows him through preschool, primary, and secondary education, along with the exclusions they incur. The damaging spiral of rejection continues through behavioural correction centres and residential school and, as he gets older, college, drugs, violence, attempted suicides, law courts, and ultimately prison.
It is also an inspirational story of a family brought to the edge of endurance; of bonds stretched to the breaking point; of a stepfathers struggle to let go of his own child, accept two others, and learn to love again; and of a brothers indomitable resilience to rise above the all-encompassing chaos and destruction surrounding him, to survive and succeed on his own path. Sams long, uncompromising determination to push everyone and everything away met his mothers equally unwavering determination to fight, not only for her son but for her family. He has been her greatest teacher.
Poignant, thought-provoking, and intense, this raw, no-holds-barred story will make you laugh and cry.

Autoren-Porträt von Carol Overend
Born in 1959 and the eldest of three children, Carol was always known for her vivid imagination. A child of the forces and bullied at school, she found solace in the only thing that made school bearable: reading and writing. English became the only lesson she looked forward to, allowing her imagination to run wild and escape from reality for a short while. Her father was a steward in the Royal Air Force, so along with her mother and two brothers, she moved about every three years. Carol’s happiest childhood years were spent living in Cyprus, the only place she can recall not being bullied. She attributes this to the fact that it was the only school she went to where all the other kids belonged to forces families as well.
In her final year of school, Carol came to live with her family in York, and with English the only GCSE she obtained, she started her working life in the shop of the famous Betty’s. Not ready to settle down and with itchy feet, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps, signing up at the age of 17 to a career in the RAF, which lasted seven and a half years.
Carol returned to York, where she met and married her first husband and had two sons. It wasn’t a particularly happy marriage, and although she tried to hold it together, it finally ended in divorce after seven years.
Carol is now happily remarried and still living in the beautiful city of York with her husband, two sons, and West Highland terrier, Molly. Having carried her passion for writing close to her heart over the years, she has only now found the time, energy, and freedom to explore that passion.
