The effective stress equation expresses the equilibrium relation of the internal force of soil, and has a uniform and constantly tenable expression for saturated soil and unsaturated soil. For the conventional geo-mechanical issues, the effect of pore fluid pressure on the deformation and strength of soil can be neglected, and the effective stress determines the deformation and strength of soil. Derived based on the equivalent principle of soil deformation and strength change, the stress should not be called effective stress, but equivalent stress instead. To help readers better understand and accept these ideas, the book makes detailed discussion on some issues, such as whether the effective stress is the true stress of soil, whether the effective stress equation needs amendment, definition and formula of penetration, soil stress state variables for soils and the effective stress of unsaturated soil, whether it's necessary to consider the surface tension membrane in unsaturated soil as an independent phase, etc.
